Sustainable travel app gets funding boost
Published: Tuesday 9 September 2025

The council has been awarded funding to continue running the BetterPoints – Think, Move, Breathe app.
The funding from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport People and Place Programme will allow the app to continue until March 2026, promoting active and sustainable travel by rewarding users for walking, cycling, wheeling, running, and using public transport.
During 2024/25, more than 160,000 active and sustainable journeys were recorded on the app with 79% of participants agreeing they are more likely to walk for a journey as a result of the BetterPoints - Think, Move, Breathe app.
Chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “This welcome funding will allow even more people to take part in the Think, Move Breathe challenge.
“This successful campaign complements the council’s wider strategy to create a safe and accessible sustainable transport network as well as helping to improve air quality across South Lanarkshire and beyond.”
Users download the free BetterPoints app, which tracks journeys and awards points based on the distance and mode of travel. These points can be redeemed for vouchers at local businesses, donated to charities, and used to enter prize draws, creating incentives to choose sustainable travel options.
By choosing to walk, cycle, or take the bus or train, you’re not just getting from A to B—you’re creating positive changes which helps reduce pollution, ease traffic congestion, and lower carbon emissions. Together, these actions build greener, safer, and more vibrant communities for everyone now and for future generations.
The beauty of active travel is its simplicity. Whether it’s a short walk to work, a bike ride with friends, or hopping on the bus or train, these choices add up to a healthier planet and a healthier and happier you.
